Legal Basis
The State Law on the Preservation of the Historic Town of Graz 2008 (GAEG) in brief
All new buildings, additions, extensions and conversions, as well as awnings, canopies, solar and antenna systems, advertising and public announcement facilities, parking areas and pergolas that are located in a protection zone and require a permit, and are subject to a notification obligation under the Styrian Building Code also require a permit under the GAEG. The application for a permit under the Building Code also serves as an application for a permit under the GAEG. The Building Authority has to obtain an expert opinion from the Historic Town Expert Commission that clarifies:
- whether the building project blends in with the existing appearance, and
- whether the characteristics of buildings worthy of protection are impaired.
Detailed rules were enacted by decrees on the design of windows, the preservation of the roofscape, and the design of announcement facilities.
